Book III of the ongoing saga erupts against the backdrop of historical characters and places when the Arkansas Delta seethed with strife and violence during the Great Depression.

Guns, terror, deception, and intrigue test Minnie and her mother Nora’s determination to return to their ancestral roots. Scorned by men of all classes with the notion women cannot run a plantation, Minnie and Nora’s grit and resolve are unyielding in the face of obstacles and the prevailing prejudice.

Bound to the women’s desire to save the land is a vow to settle the score against those who viciously attacked their family. Motivated by revenge to destroy those men responsible, more land is accumulated. More land brings more wealth, power, and influence with a reach to the state capitol.

Fear is not an option for Minnie and Nora, even when other wealthy planters have created the Nightriders—thugs who terrorize the landless—and intimidate other planters who fail to resist the first white and black Union in the nation.

Socialism takes hold. A perceived attempt by Communists to influence the Union increases the retaliation from planters toward the dispossessed and helpless. While the men worry about political philosophies, Minnie and Nora fashion an empire of cotton even greater than the plantation before it.

Still, in the turmoil of the times, Minnie does not compromise her character and values.

J. Keck is a master storyteller, his three books are wonderful to read, and the third leaves you wanting more. He masterfully explores and allows the reader to get a sense of the Mississippi Delta, and the life there, with the people and the ones who built their homes, and kept them safe. He interweaves many cool beginnings, like the start of the stock market, the amazing information of the Free Blacks, being the law and making sure those who tried to steal from you are brought to justice, business ventures, which could have led to murder. and much more.
I enjoyed all three books immensely, and one of the characters, is a main part of Minnie's live is taken from her, leaving her in deep sorrow. These are great books, and I hope the author continues with a fourth book, showing how the family does in new regions of the United States.
Welcome to the world of the pioneers of the new ways of living, before and through the Depression, and the tension between family members, from having to make a harsh decision about Minnie, in the first book, and how she overcame it, and became truly, her Grandfather's granddaughter, and the rage over the death of the manager of her Grandfather's house by Klu Klux Klan, and the terrible ending of the beautiful home after the Grandfather's natural death.
The farm and lands of the Grandfather, has sharecroppers and tenants of those who worked on the farm, coming to an end, with the only way to make money and survive, is to end this type of employees/sharecroppers, and start doing the farming with modern farm equipment, and finally the unique way Minnie's mother gets revenge of those men who killed Marie, and burnt the house up, leaving deep sorrow and rage over the crimes.
I highly recommend these books, and the third is the wonderful finalizing of the first two books, but the other two lays the groundwork for the third, and each is a whole book in theirselves.
J.Keck is a master storyteller, and his stories are full, beautiful and graceful, of the talented writer, but also of the storyteller, lovingly reading his book, and giving us a first chapter of what is possibly going to be a fourth book, of which, I can hardly wait to get my hands on, for this is great, outstanding , talent of a superb writer and storyteller.

The Big House Story of a Southern Family edition by J Keck Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I've now read the Trilogy Book 3 exceeded my expectations. The plot, the characters, and the dialogue were great. Realizing the book is historical fiction I appreciated the story even more. Author J. Keck kept me engrossed from the beginning to the end of the book. It is well written and well paced. The accounts, allowing me to see, hear, and feel moment by moment the story. I recommend this book highly. Thanks to the author.
I enjoyed the story very much! Seemed a bit long and I was ready to move onto the next story.
Great story. Wished the book would never end.
i loved this book. i couldn't put it down. Each chapter kept me wanting to read further into the book and i had to pace myself because i knew once i read it i had to wait for the next book. waiting on pins and needles for the next one right now.
I have enjoyed The Big House series very much.
Each volume has been as well written as the last, and as difficult to put down even at the completion of the last page.
Having lived in the south east as a young girl there are so many of my own memories piqued by this story's loving relationships and experiences.
I've enjoyed reading the series of the Big House. This book hasn't been as enjoyable as the previous ones. It was too predictable. If there is a continuation, I hope the read will be more like the previous ones.
Book three is every bit as good as book 1. I want Book 4 now. The characters stay true through out the three books but they do not stay stagnant. There is growth and development throughout that is honest and human. I love Minnie and I really want to know more about her. Please write a book 4! (I have never asked an author to do that before). Why is this not on Goodreads?
